| just reading..again...in relevant..
"faith should lead us beyond ourselves. yet so often it doesn't. so we manipulate it to suit our purposes."
in Captivating, Staci Eldridge writes about how we so easily create fictional worlds to feed our souls..which i interpreted as the way we reframe situations to be more tolerable, dare i say advantageous for ourselves. in this process of becoming fixated on my momentary hunger, i often times think i neglect to recognize the perspectives of others or the impact my distortions have on those around me.

| today i read something pretty disturbing..
Americans are far more socially isolated today than they were two decades ago, and a sharply growing number of people say they have no one in whom they can confide, according to a comprehensive new evaluation of the decline of social ties in the United States.
A quarter of Americans say they have no one with whom they can discuss personal troubles, more than double the number who were similarly isolated in 1985. Overall, the number of people Americans have in their closest circle of confidants has dropped from around three to about two.
The comprehensive new study paints a sobering picture of an increasingly fragmented America, where intimate social ties -- once seen as an integral part of daily life and associated with a host of psychological and civic benefits -- are shrinking or nonexistent. In bad times, far more people appear to suffer alone.
WOW! it went on to say that 50% of those that have people to share with identify their spouse as the one and only person they can confide in. Knowing that relationships keep us healthy psychologically, this is a sobering prospect. I am just thinking how amazing my friends are...and reminding myself to intentionally cultivate those relationships. They give us the essence of life. Without them we would be functionig invisibly...in a vaccum. With no context, we have no base for interpreting joy or pain.
| so i had a strange experience the other day....
it was a warm sunny day and i was sitting outside starbucks in utica square, this outdoor shopping area near my house, cramming for a test, distracting myself by people watching. a girl was walking toward starbucks in a super cute summer dress, carrying the ugliest little tan chihuahua you can picture (bug eyes and all). she walked right up to me and asked if i could please hold her dog (in my lap, on my new summer skirt) while she ran inside to get a drink. of course, i was overcome with compassion (or maybe not quick enough to figure a way out) and i abliged. i held the smelly, hairy, scarry thing and she returned 10 minutes later, reclaimed him, and bopped off. after i got over the 'i now smell like a dog (but thank god he didnt pee on me) factor' i realized that some people are inclined to trust complete strangers....

May 22, 2006
3:52 P.M. – A security officer was dispatched to BAH in reference to a theft from one of the offices. The officer was told that someone had stolen soda pop from a refrigerator, as well as other items from the office. There was no sign of forced entry and at this time there are no suspects known
are you kidding me? needless to say, things get quite slow around a university during summer....
